Another botched review by Seattle Times. I can't help but wonder, do they get anything right?
They gave 10,000 B.C. 1.5/4 stars. I say, total botch. As usual, they are pretentious pseudo-intellectuals who wouldn't know a good movie if it bit them in the ass.
Anyway, enough about Seattle times. About the movie.
For all who like movies dealing in prehistory ala "One Night With the King," "300," "Gladiator" etc, you will find this movie very enjoyable. I happen to be really big fan of ancient movies.
But aside from style and setting, was the story good? I'd say hell yes. It is a story not unlike that of the original Star Wars in structure, and in a lot of ways, closely resembles "300". And yes, this is definitely a good thing.
It has all the makings of a good movie. Plenty of action. Beautiful effects and cinematography. But its strengths are its sentimentality, romance, and a sense of a "greater calling." Indeed the sense of a greater calling is prevalent throughout the film, and while the gods of egypt are proven to be false and heretical, the sense of a higher calling, (or like in Star Wars, the "force") gives the characters a certain underlying motivation that they wouldn't otherwise have. For our main protaganist, it is all about love, and ruiniting his family; for his backers, it is about overthrowing a corrupt regime, casting out fake gods, freeing the slaves, and saving their own tribes.
Therefore, this wasn't a mediocre movie. ANd it wasn't just sort of good, either. It was really good. For all fans of ancient stories, I highly recommend this film.
4/4*
