I take a strange stance on this issue:

I think that inmates that have a life sentence should be given the opportunity at any time to die if they choose.

I think that it's a waste of resources to keep people who have a life sentence alive if they don't even want to live.

I will agree, but that can get kind of sticky. I mean, who determines if that person wants to die or not? IF they are feeling depressed one day and say that, is it off with their head, or do they have to be sure about it for a certain amount of time first? Should there be witnesses to their testimony to make sure they REALLY want to die? A court hearing? I think it is important that if we give people the option of dying, we make sure it is really what they want. Otherwise, even more money will be lost in our justice system, when family members sue the prisons.

You definitely bring up some good points. Those could be some potential issues, but I think the issues would be a lot less and certainly COST a lot less than what happens currently.

I'm not entirely sure how I feel about this subject. I mean, say someone is suicidal, so they decide to try to turn it around with one last shot by going on a bank robbing spree and kill 7 people in the process, thinking that large amounts of money might change their mind, but then get caught. Then they opt for death. They were going to do that anyway, but because prison offers no accountability since they can choose to die, they figured, "Hey, I had nothing to lose and seven people are dead. I change my mind, I do know how I feel about this subject. It's a bad idea without working it out first so that it had to be non-violent crimes to get the option.

Thanks for that. I've not seen that angle brought up before on any forum. I'm glad you're here. Smile

That really gives me something to think about on the subject now. I'll have to get back to this later.
