At last, this is being looked into. I still just don't get how something like this could happen--not after the spills we've had in the past. There should have been some procedures in place to keep this from happening.

Let us say they are found at fault, what will that mean? A fine? You mean like the one EXXON did not have to pay?

Ughhh. Did they REALLY not have to pay anything? How did they get out of it?
At first I thought I remembered that, but I don't really. That's awful if that was true. I'm going to look that up.

The fine was lessened by a court and now they are asking that they not have to pay the new sum.

"criminal probe"
Unless these guys ran into the bridge on purpose, this is NOT a criminal matter - its a civil matter.

Absolutely it should be looked into - find out what happened to improve safety rules - so this doesn't happen again.
If this captain was negligent, he should lose his license and/or the company should be fined/ saddled with the cleanup costs etc.

Yes, absolutely. And I like your answer to how to take care of if the captain if the captain was negligent. Jail wouldn't do him any good and would just cost us more.

I read that to.
There is a major clean up bill to be paid.
I will be interested in the findings of the investigation.
They can't be blaming fog?????
If this was a mechanical failure - ruder didn't work - then this is an accident, but tax payers shouldn't have to pay the bill.
If it was more like - the Capt was wasted and passed out - then we can look at criminal penalties as well.
