So, on my huge quest to find better (but still free) security programs, I originally downloaded Spyware doctor again, (since I already paid for it,) and it crashed my computer. Can't figure it out, but literally, it just KEPT RESTARTING my computer. I coudln't stop it. So I went into advanced mode and chose to go back to a time when "everything was working" or something like that as an option, and got rid of it.
Lo and behold there is a much simpler verison of spyware doctor, and a free version of NORTON for scanning only (which is what I freaking want anyway-- it is all this background blocking bs which screws up my computer) both absoultey free, with a ton of other badass programs from "google pack beta". If you haven't checked it out yet I suggest you do. They have cool ass programs for free (they are simpler versions of the paid programs,) including google earth, which I haven't tried yet.
I am now in the final process of installing the simpler version of spyware doctor (which SHOULD be okay for my computer) and norton. Here is the URL to check out all the free simpler programs. I am very excited about all this!
http://pack.google.com
as I remember that being the root. Check it out and let me know what you think. FOr all I know, I could be the last person to know baout this, too,

I hadn't heard of it. Let me ask--did it install Google Toolbar or Google Desktop? If not, I'll probably look into that. If so, no thanks.

No, although it did require installing google updater, which I am fine with. I KNEW those spyware programs weren't finding everything! Spyware doctor found 4 spywares, one ant-spyware (maybe this was the problem?) and loads of data miners! WTF?

Beware though, even the free one is a bit of a data hog. I went on their web site and got their older version and it is much easier on my computer

I don't blame you for being cautious-- I HATE-- (and there are few things I hate, one of them is cat poop)-- toolbars. My Firefox is very plain. I remember the hellish moment when I had a toolbar from aol (I think, it has been so long now,) and all of a sudden I had all these spywares on my computer. Maybe a coincidence.
Anyway, the google update manager is their own cute little program which cues up the downloads for you rather than a direct download. Think of it like a torrent. IGN also has one when you download games off of (actually, I cant' remember the name of that web site. Gamespy?)
I scanned it and it seems to be non-spyware related. In fact, if I wanted to, now that I downloaded that stuff, I could pretty easily uninstall it and get rid of it.
But I don't blame you for being a bit skeptical about it-- I am very aware of all the bullshit that various companies try to put on our computers all the time. Every time I install something I get the option of installing AOL, GOOGLE, and a variety of other bullshit WITH the program I am intending to install.
For me it was worth the risk so I could get some badass programs.
Sometime when I don't have so much homework, I can't wait to test out google earth, too! Man that looks sweet!

Google earth is GREAT. I use it a lot.
I've used it so many times to find great hiking trails.

Sweet. Hey, do you know if it has tough computer requirements? The google pack gives hardly any details in the description of the stuff you can get through it. Anywayz, STILL DOING HOMEWORK, so I have to be brief. Man, I can't wait for this quarter to be over....

not only is google pack awesome, but if you guys have your own websites and put up google pack download links, google will pay you a bunch for each download. i think its two bucks for each download. you can check it out at the adsense page if you're interested

Nice, that may be a way for "The Truth" forums to raise money. In fact, not only that, but it may be a way for "kizzume forum" to raise some money!

It's an interesting thought--doing that--but it would be hard for me to endorse something I don't use myself. Download managers I am just not into, personally. If they had something like an adsense thing for Google Earth, I'd consider it in a heartbeat--like I said, I LOVE Google Earth.

you are a very princpled man, that is noble of you. i'm not sure how the google pack works, i thought maybe you could download it and just install the features you want (for example, you can skip the toolbar) but maybe i'm being naive. from reading jq's reply it sounds like you have to install everything, thats too bad.
i have used google earth for bike trails, you're right it is awesome -- there was a place where the trail ended and i couldnt tell where it started up again. with google earth i was able to see it a few blocks away!

Another great thing is when I'm able to find entire parks that one didn't even know were there. There have been some parks right in the middle of the city that aren't really labeled except a tiny sign on a stick pounded into the ground just at one of the entrances, that just look like it would be someone's back yard when you look from the road. There's this one in Tacoma by the Salishan housing--on 56th and Portland--but you go a little past Portland ave. until it dead ends. There's one of the entrances. I had no idea that was there until Google earth. I don't go to those trails much anymore because of how gang-infested they seem to be now.
But yeah--I love Google Earth.
