Health Insurer Must Pay $9 Million for Canceling Sick Woman's Policy
http://www.abcnews.go.com/GMA/OnCallPlusBreastCancerNews/story?id=4338818
| Quote: | Bates faced the bureaucratic diagnosis of rescission: when a health insurer retroactively cancels your insurance policy. But in a precedent-setting decision announced last week, a California judge ordered Bates' insurer to pay her more than $9 million for dropping her policy after it learned she had cancer.
When Bates, a 52-year-old hairdresser, found out she had breast cancer in 2004 she thought she had reliable health insurance.
But her insurer, Health Net, dropped her coverage while she was in the middle of breast cancer chemotherapy, leaving Bates with $129,000 dollars in unpaid medical bills and no choice but to abandon her lifesaving treatment.
Bates said she had undergone surgery to remove a tumor and had received her first two chemotherapy treatments when doctors stopped treating her because her bills were going unpaid. |
At least she got the money, but the fact that employees are often paid bonuses for canceling the most plans is absolutely sickening.

That's what happens in a capitalist system, sad to say, because the object isn't to provide anyone with care: it's not a public service. It's to maximize profits regardless of whether or not it causes significant health problems to people. The profit motive of private insurance companies will almost always lead to them dropping you, creating loopholes, or making it impossible to get care if they can get away with it.
You get a similar problem with other types of private insurance.
They will let you DIE if you can't pay. They just stop treating you. There is no sense of public service.

The more that time passes, the more that it seems to appear as if capitalism looks like the bad guy.
