Going through the annoying process of trying to download a bunch of files through rapid share. But they have a bogus limited amount of times you can download per hour. (1 download per hour APPARENTLY.)

Well, I shut down my firefox, deleted all personal info, including my cookies, reset my modem and got a different IP number, went back on, and.....I am still being told to wait....

So what I am wondering is, how do they know its me? What information are they keeping on me that I can't just delete? Is there another way around this, another thing I can delete or do?

Thanks

Your mac address, unless you changed that too. There might be a way they're getting your registered computer number--it's called something else, but I can't remember the name right now....

If you don't know how to change your mac address, I can tell you how.

Go to network connections in the control panel.

Right click your current connection and select properties.

Find the configure button near the top on the right side next to the name of your ethernet card/board/thingy.

In the new window, click the advanced tab

Now click Network Address, which is your mac address.

If your card is able to do it, there should be a hex number there.

Only change the last couple numbers. Sometimes some of the numbers that you might choose may not work correctly, so if one doesn't work, try again, but make sure you copy the original number into a notepad or something.

After you do this, you then need to turn off your modem, go back to Network Connections, right click, select disable, wait, turn on your modem again and then re-enable the connection. Voila.

It's a special number that defines your computer. If you tried to connect several computers at a time to the same network using the SAME network/mac address, there would be conflicts and the network would not operate correctly, to put it in a general way. It's basically a number that identifies your machine.

Make you you read the edit I put onto my last message.

Darn. Okay--well, I'll have to get back with you later on that---there's a trial version of a program that lets you do it, that once it's ran, you can uninstall it and then change a registry setting to change your mac address.... hmmm.....

I was hoping you had a friendly card/interface.... darn..

Its okay. thanks anyway though. I think I will just fork out the $10 some time after I get my next paycheck so I can download all the files. I want them badly, and there are like 200 of them, so....

If you pay $10 you get to have unlimited downloads....

You wouldn't have any extra ethernet cards lying around, would you? If you did, you could put that in your machine and use that instead and it would be a different mac address right off the bat....

Well, if it wasn't so late, and we lived a little bit closer, I'd drop one off your way. I think I have 3 extras.

Man, what do you do with that many ethernet cards? ANyway, yeah I am about to go to bed but I appreciate the sentiment and the fast responses. I could always forge the membership, too, but I don't think it is worth the risks. And I just found the show I was looking for on streaming internet anyway, so my sense of urgency has diminished quite a lot. Wink

I have that many cards because I usually grab people's old machines when they upgrade, if they're not going to keep the old parts. They're handy to have around just in case. I probably have enough parts to put together 2 full-fledged older machines, but not very big hard drives though--like 2-8gb, but the fact that I have the parts around to do such is kind-of nice.

I paypalled for a 48 hour membership at rapid share. Even with the membership, that was a LOT of downloading, because, annoyingly enoguh, the files are all 400 mb each, but rapid share only allows uploading up to 100 mb. So each and every episode had to be downloaded in 4 pieces, and then combined when extracting them. It became vary tedius by episode 12
