Interesting that Linux still is the one that's the hardest to hack. The fact that they were able to hack MacOS-X says a lot though....

Yeah. In 2 freaking minutes they were able to hack it! As opposed to THREE DAYS for vista. I knew it was only a matter of time before the arrogance of Apple caught up with their quality control.

Thank you for posting this. I just sent out an email to everyone. IN YOUR FACE MAC USERS!!!!111!!

I can't wait to get a new comptuer screen to change my old comptuer to linux. You don't happen to know someone with a spare screen, right?

Unfortunately, I don't know anyone with an...... wait a minute.... I might have an old screen you can have, but I can't say it's going to be really clear/sharp. I'll have to see if I still have it up in the attic...

Also, since you are on my email list now.....did my assesment seem correct? I mean, third party security software would help slow down a hacker on any OS, right?

Well, actually a GOOD router that has lots of options is better than any software firewall. Unfortunately, I only have a shit router that's really really old, so I don't have the options I should. But yes, having some sort of security firewall is very helpful, whether hardware or software--hardware firewalls don't slow down your computer though...

Another thing you can do, for instance, if you get that linux computer going, and you get a separate network adapter so you have 2 total, you can probably configure your linux machine to BE your router/firewall for your newer computer.

I don't understand how routers work. For one, I am not even sure I have a router.....not a wireless one anyway. I have one of those stupid motorola surfboards, they're called-- the ones provided by comcast when you sign up for their cable. Does that qualify as a router and how do you know what makes a router safest, etc?

Well, I'm talking about a wired router, not a wireless one, unless you NEED a wireless one. Go with the wired if you can.

There is a number called a mac address that anything you connect to your network has assigned to it. When you connect a computer to your cable modem, the ISP (Internet Service Provider) will assign you an IP (Internet Protocol) address based on the mac address of the network adapter of your computer. In order to have a connection to the internet, you must have an IP that is assigned to you by the ISP. If you were to get a box called HUB, you could connect more computers to that same cable modem, but each computer would have get assigned a new IP from the ISP, which, depending on your service provider, could be costly. Basically a HUB is a splitter. Some people have the idea in their heads that a router is simply like a HUB, a splitter, when this is simply not the case.

A router is almost like a little computer that has its own basic network in it. It is able to assign IP's to any device that is connected to it. It has its own mac address that once you have the cord from your cable modem plugged into it, the ISP only has to give ONE IP address to you, and the router will then route the information to the other devices connected to it. Routers have many advantages.

In a GOOD router, there are lots of security settings that are similar to those in a firewall program. You go to the settings of your router by typing in an IP address and typing the username and password.
