Lott leaves the sinking repub ship.

Senator Trent Lott?s announcement on Monday that he would resign in a few weeks added to the growing Republican exodus from Congress, but may have strengthened Mr. Lott?s post-Senate job prospects.

By retiring before the end of the year, Mr. Lott, the 66-year-old minority whip and Mississippi dealmaker who fell from power with a remark touching on segregation but then bounced back, avoids new rules forcing senators to wait two years before lobbying former colleagues.

Still, Mr. Lott insisted Monday that he was not ending his 35-year career in Congress because of the rules, pointing instead to ?financial commitments? made before Hurricane Katrina, a desire to ?do something else? and other reasons

I like Trent Lott -

However, I think back to the Thurmond B-Day bash and the "racist" remark.

Did any of you think it was racist?

I know Lott, I live less than 20 miles from him and have talked with him often--yes--I think he is a racist. He hides it well, but after all he is a politician. Lott would esasily win re-election, so he is leaving so that he can make as much money as possible as a lobbyist. He is big buds with Barbour, the gov of Miss and a high priced lobbyist.

Chuq -

Are you near Biloxi?

I agree that his seat was in no danger - therefore the sinking ship analogy doesn't work. I'm sue it is about the money.
I have no reason to doubt you regarding his racism - I am sorry to hear that though. There is no place for that in government nor anywhere
else for that matter.

It is time for the next generation to step up. Guy like Lott, Kennedy, etc - too much time in government, too much power. I think 20+ years in the senate would have
a negative effect on anyone.

Fresh faces are a necessity. I agree that that many years in the senate could potentially create a very cynical person.

Fresh feces is something different altogether....

There is a republican opportunity here to take the party back.

These old guys retiring - though in very safe seats - is an opportunity for reformers to come in.

Pass the torch to the next generation kinda thing.

I like it. We need it.
