Recently, I ran out of ink in my printer. Sadly, this meant that before school I was going to kinkos every time an assignment was due for school, and paying $1-$4 to have my homework printed out. I am low on money as is. And kinkos is a ripoff!

Then I found out that my local library (probably every library, at least in king county) allows you to print up to 20 free sheets of paper PER DAY. FOR FREE. NOT FOR PROFIT. Needless to say, I have gone there now, have MORE control over my paper (for one, I am not being charged by the minute on their computers, so I have more time to adjust my paper as I see fit,) and I get to print my homework assignments for free. It isn't a huge savings, but I am probably saving $15-25 a month now thanks to the library.

Similarly, I needed a book for school, and DID NOT want to pay the huge amount for it. I am low on money. Lo and behold, it was available at the library. My stupid class spent a week on this book-- ONE WEEK-- and I was supposed to buy this brand new at a ridiculous price and then shelf it for ever so I could use it for ONE WEEK? I think not. Luckily, the library saved me $18.

Then there is music. I have regularly been trying out new music from the library. It has diversified my knowledge of artists, while giving me a heads up on what is good and what is crap. Once again, the library has benefitted me greatly. It has saved me money from not wasting my money on crap cds, and it has helped me discover new artists, some of which I have now seen in concert!

So I say, ode to the library. It may be the last perfect thing we have left, but it really does come close to being perfect. It is really one hell of a nice resource, and it really has saved me a lot of money!

I owe the Fern Hill Library a lot of gratitude.
