| Quote: | BRAMPTON, Ontario: A Pakistani-Canadian teenager whose father was charged with her strangling death yesterday had told friends she was worried he would kill her over her refusal to wear the Muslim headscarf and her decision to move out.
Aqsa Parvez died on Monday night in hospital after being attacked in her home in a Toronto suburb.
Police declined to name a motive for the killing, and a lawyer for the girl's family said there was "more to the story than just cultural issues".
A judge yesterday ordered Mohammed Parvez to be held without bail on murder charges and told him not to communicate with a son who has been charged with obstructing police in connection with the 16-year-old girl's death.
The death reignited debate in Canada about Islam and the conflict between first- and second-generation immigrants who struggle to maintain traditional religious values and their children's desire to fit into Western culture. Canada has about 750,000 Muslims.
Aqsa, who moved from Pakistan with her family, had fought with them over the traditional hijab and her wish to assimilate, and had been staying with a friend, said Joel Brown, 17, a classmate at Applewood Heights Secondary school in Mississauga, Ontario.
She was returning home over the weekend to collect some belongings to move out for good, but said she was afraid her father would "kill her", Joel said.
"She was scared," he said. "But students often talk like that, so I thought I'd see her the next day. I didn't expect her never to return to school." |
This absolutely sickens me to read this story. Every one of these stories I read, the less I can empathize with those who follow Islam. If people want to live their lives like that, they should stay in the countries where they allow that kind of bullshit. I bet in some of the middle eastern countries, that father's actions would have been considered noble.
This story sickens me.

Just so it is known--just like I said in a similar thread on OTL--I KNOW that most Muslims WHO DO NOT live in the middle east and aren't bound by Islamic law are not extremists and are usually very peaceful people. When the Spanish Inquisition happened, to be angry at the Catholic church was justified, and to me, right now, for us to be angry at Islam is justified. It's not a reflection on EVERYONE that practices Islam, just the ones who take it to extremes, and unfortunately, most of the people who are forced to live under Islamic law. When you're raised that way, it's kind-of hard to break those patterns when it's the law to follow those patterns.
I don't know what the answer is to this. I sure wish I did.
