Even if there were a character that were 'normal' and gay, the gay community would try to classify that person and would find reason to berate/belittle. I am of the opinion that gay's want to be their own heroes.

Unfortunately, you're probably right.
I should add that I think it's good that people are wanting to be their own heroes. I think it's unfortunate that people would find a way to chastize/degrade, like you were saying.

On another forum, I was discussing this more....
I started really thinking about what you said---I think EVERYONE wants to be their own role models, but media's portrayals still affect everyone.
I also started thinking again about how media wants interesting characters, brought to my attention through that other forum--straight people have interesting characters that don't have to act macho or feminine--they can just be people with interesting traits. I don't think a stereotypical gay man is interesting, I think a stereotypical gay man is irritating.
Why can't there be any interesting gay characters that what is interesting about them isn't the fact that they're a swishy bitchy whiny stereotypical gay man?

Here's a quote from the other forum, on Political Wrinkles: http://www.politicalwrinkles.com/civil-rights/1812-how-gay-male-homosexuality-initiation.html#post13409
| tristanrobin wrote: | I think they do on dramatic shows. The gay guys on "Brothers and Sisters," or "Judge Amy," or other dramatic shows, have a far more diverse group of gay people.
But, just as ALL types of people, sitcoms are the stuff of stereotypes. That's just the way it is. They're not looking for "interesting" - they're LOOKING FOR the stereotypes - for ALL characters. All girls have big tits, all dads are dumb, all wives are overbearing and all-knowing, all businessmen are constipated, all jocks are stupid, all homely guys are horn dogs, etc. etc. etc. It's the nature of the genre. |
I've gotta say--no matter what, that was a good post. You are correct that there have been a number of drama shows that gay characters have been more realistic. Thanks for bringing that to my attention.

That's what I've been doing quite a bit of too. What forum are you talking about "the hardcore site"?

It's not as bad as it was last year ... though, no question, the religious zealots can be a real pain in the ass.

Yeah, it's nutty but it's not that bad. It seems like what LiberalForum was trying to be before it got unreasonably retarded.
