You know, I never really bought into that North vs. South bit until I went to the North for a visit. Let me tell you, they are like two different worlds. I'm not afraid to admit that I'm a Southern Boy. I've flown the Rebel Flag while sitting on the porch drinking sweet iced tea, eating Pecan Pie and breathing in the Magnolia. I didn't really think that the people were that different, but man I was in for a shock. There were no manners, NONE. Letting doors shut in the face of ladies, especially elderly ladies? Cutting people off like crazy in traffic and then giving YOU the bird? I didn't hear Ma'am or Sir unless it was coming out of MY mouth... I can tell you, they might be real sophisticated up there, but if sophisticated means sacrificing manners and courtesy, I think I'll stay down here.

I'm born and raised upstate NY. But I lived in Georgia for 12 years. Each has thier good points, and bad.
But I'll tell you one thing about the north, you know where you stand with folks, if they don't like you, they'll tell you so.

When I was in New York, everyone just talked about the subjects they wanted to talk about and it didn't matter where they were--the mindset was--it's none of your business. That was actually a refreshing change from what I'm used to over here, where everyone usually is subdued in conversation, lots of people are afraid to talk loud, there's some ordinance somewhere in the puget sound area that you can get a ticket for using a horn to get someone to go in front of you. In New York, or at least around Manhattan anyway, it's pretty much based on this: If you don't cause an accident, what's the problem?
The negative side to it is this: If someone shot you with a silencer or stabbed you on a busy street and ran away, some people would probably just walk over the body and think to themselves--"why did this person decide to lay down in a place like this when I'm in a hurry because I'm late for my schedule".
Yes, you are correct--positives and negatives.
I think it would be kind-of cool to live there for a while, but I don't think I'd want it to be my permanent residence--I'd miss some of the hardly-touched wilderness areas we have over here, and I'd miss being able to be in a lower tax bracket than I'd have to be to have the same kind of living I have here. The cost of living is OUTRAGEOUS over there.
In Georgia, I only got to see a little bit of Atlanta. My ex had a job over there that lasted a few months, and his job would pay for the flight for me to go over there for a bit or the other way around. Atlanta has the most confusing conglomeration of roads I've ever seen.
Peachtree Blvd E, Peachtree Blvd S, Peachtree Blvd W, etc..
Peachtree Boulevard Ct, Peachtree Boulevard Ct E etc.
Peachtree Avenue , ct, w, e, etc..
Peachtree Road etc..
Avenue Boulevard
Boulevard Avenue
Roads that twist all around and there's no way to base where you're going on landmarks unless you know the twisted shape of what's to come next.
The bad thing about New York are the crazy drivers--the roads, although there are a lot of toll roads, are somewhat handleable, more than Atlanta by far.
Dallas was difficult for me only because without realizing it I have used land elevation as my own gauge of how far I am from something or where I am--everything was flat there. Work was EASY EASY to get in Dallas, at least it was in '99, and at that time it was hard to get work in the Puget Sound area of Washintgon.
I'm rambling. Sorry about that...

There certainly is some truth to what debateman is saying. I moved from upstate NY to North Carolina about 10 years ago and there is a much larger difference then what I expected. I've noticed that many people that live in larger cities seem to have lost some of their manners, but many country people still seem to hold onto them. I live in a very poor, very rural part of NC and many of the people here are far less educated then where I came from, and it is far more difficult to discuss current events in a rational way. An example from one of my co workers just the other day, when I asked why the sign installation crew wasn't here, he said "them boys is blowed their truck up". Took me a minute to figure that one out and iIt can be somewhat difficult at times, but I guess like everyone else has said there's good and bad to each. I really like hearing yes sir and yes ma'am instead of yeah, especially from kids. It shows some respect.

The south--well, at least in the areas of Texas I've been in and the bit of time I spent in Atlanta, the cities there have large pockets of segregation, and people don't really try to hide it unless they're trying to be hospitable to a group of people--and that's the thing, even if they feel a certain way about someone, they'll still be hospitable. In NY in the city, everything is integrated--you have little tiny pockets/sections, but they're so small that they're not worth that label, and as they'll include everyone, they'll not be very hospitable to barely anyone except people who they consider VIPs--it's like they're too much in a hurry. I'm very much generalizing.
