Trying to convert my waves to MP3 through LAME, and running into the weirdest problem all of a sudden. All my songs read as 55 minutes long......EACH....BUT, if I listen through it it is its actual length, and then generally about 51 minutes of silence. Do you have any idea why this would be?

To clarify, this happens AFTER the MP3 conversion.

That is weird. Are you using a standalone version of LAME? With command line?

I usually do it through Audacity and it seems to work out great.

Question: When going directly through Audacity I keep getting it compressed at 128 kbps. Is there a way to change that? (Because otherwise things work great through audacity.)

Yeah, when you export the file, and you've selected MP3, click the options button and you'll be able to select from there.

What version of lame does it say you're using in Audacity? Maybe it is I that has the older version?

LAME FE 2.2.3

I realize that LAME 3.97 is the current one, and I am not sure if LAME FRONT END uses the same one or not. (But when I tried to install LAME 3.97 separately it didn't work out .....)

I'm using Audacity Beta 1.3.3 (I'm about to upgrade to 1.3.4), and I'm using Lame 3.97.

If you want to try the one I'm using, try putting this in the audacity directory, rename the original file just in case:
