Apple seems to be making a retarded new laptop computer. The MacBook Air.
http://www.macworld.com/article/131696/2008/01/macbookair_faq.html?t=201
Good news, it's a tiny 3 pound laptop.
Here are the drawbacks:
You can't replace the battery. It's a permanent battery. Looks like they're trying to apply their horrible concept they started with the iPods into their new laptops. Battery doesn't hold a charge for very long anymore? Get a new laptop, or send your laptop off to be "repaired"! The battery lasts 5 hours when the computer isn't being used for anything intensive.
It has no cd, optical or any type of drive that you can load software into it. Instead, you install Apple software on another computer and connect the laptop to that computer and use the drive as a virtual drive. That's REALLY stupid!
The only ports the computer has are a speaker/headphone minijack, a USB 2.0 port, and a micro-DVI port. Fun.
THERE'S NO ETHERNET PORT! WHAT KIND OF CRAZY SHIT IS THAT???!
It only has an 80gb hard drive in it. If you want to upgrade to a 64gb solid state drive, it will cost $1,000 extra.
You CANNOT upgrade the memory.
At least they put in wi-fi.
The areas where Apple cuts back I just think is lame sometimes. I guess this new computer might work out for what Apple products usually work out for people--people that are rich.

Here's a picture of it, as well as a big grin on Steve Jobs:

Yeah I think the recent success of Apple has really gotten to their heads. I think most people who say "should have got a mac" when they are having problems with their pc haven't actually used a mac before and just use that as the new cliche slogan. For the record, I was raised in a house my entire life that only had mac. Every computer my mother bought was a mac and until I bought my own computer at age 18, Mac was all I knew.
And saying that, let me just say this:
Mac sucks.
Seriously, it does. I know it has its benefits and all. I realize that it is targeted less frequently for viruses. Same goes for linux. It has nothing to do with mac. The only reason why it has less viruses is because it is less used.
Apple lossless takes up more space than almost any other lossless program. FLAC, WMA lossless-- I think even Monkey Audio is a better lossless encoder.
Apple MP3 encoding is purposefully inferior to try to sell people on AAC. I say, no game.
Itunes sells music at 128 kbps. How insulting.
Macs are way more expensive. Ipods are not the best option. I considered getting an Ipod over a year ago until I researched it and foudn something way better. By today's standards its not as badass, but over a year ago, it whooped Ipod. Creative Zen 60 GB offers more customization, plays more video formats, has a higher resolution screen, the battery lasts longer and the screen doesn't get scratched nearly as easily as an ipod. Now that it has been well over a yer I realize that Apple's Ipod has made some improvements. Mostly just the size. 80-160 GB, impressive. Better battery power-- about time-- still needs you to send back to manufacture I think. Still plays hardly any video formats and still has a very scratchable screen.
I say, down with the macheads. Mac is severely overrated. And the only reason why everyone thinks it is so good is because they haven't used one before. Really, it is just the grass is greener effect. My pc sucks therefore Mac is great. No. For the price of a good mac I could get a SUPER PC. Like, so super that in 2 years it would still be above standard.

I agree with everything except the generalized "mac sucks"--after they switched to OSX, the mac OS IS truly great. Anything below OSX I absolutely loathe. I don't know how people could stand to use macs before osx.
If they weren't into being so elitist, I'd be with them, but they make most of their money from their hardware, so it's hard for them to change their direction of business completely.

I also hate that there are no games. I remember wishing I could get various games that only went to PC. LOL, rough childhood, I know.

They actually had more games back in the early Mac days than they do now.

Yeah. Still, none of the ones I wanted. One example of a game I wanted that DID come out back then: THe Sims. Sure it was $50 compared to the $30 for pc, but the biggest drag was that the expansion packs after livin' large were PC exclusive! What kind of bs is that?!?!?

Yeah, pretty sad. It's like how there have been games that were supposed to continue on the PC but then switched to being only for game consoles.

Yep. Man. Talk about a saturday to lament. Thinking back on all that could have been if Halo wasn't purchased for Xbox (as it was originaly designed for MAC) and at the games that didn't come through. I remember there was going to be a la femme nikita ps2 game. I was so excited! Then it, apparently.....got canceled. It would have been a dream if that game had come out.

There have been so many truly great canceled games. It's a real shame.

I alway wanted to buy a Mac, so I too could be uppity and pretentious. Stop shattering my dream.
I would also get Linux, if I weren't too lazy to switch. I am Microsoft's bitch.

It IS nice to be able to just focus on one's work and what one is wanting the computer to do, and not worry about viruses and spyware--but give it time--if they start becoming popular, viruses and spyware will surely start to come out for it.

If you're satisfied with one of their pre-packaged don't-upgrade deals, like an iMac where the monitor IS the computer, it works out. To me, all of their computers are like buying a laptop (but they have a full sized keyboard and a larger scren) EXCEPT their towers that cost STARTING at $2,300. I want more versatility than a laptop, and on the PC side, I can afford versatility. With the mac, I can't.
Their OS is VERY nice.
