Here's a question I have that I TRULY don't know the answer to:

Why do about 19 out of 20 gay establishments play techno/dance/house music that is a cookie-cutter of the music that is heard at bathhouses? When you go to "straight" establishments, you always hear a variety, based on where you go. It doesn't seem that way with gay establishments.

Why?

There used to be a number of places I could go that offered a different atmosphere, but since gays have gotten more accepted, particularly after the 90's, the need for gay establishments has decreased, and the only ones left seem to be the ones that fit the stereotype.

I guess I just don't understand the need for the places that are left to perpetuate that stereotype.

In Seattle, there's the Eagle, they play rock, if they're still there--it's been almost 2 years since I was there.

I miss Rock -n- Bowl on Saturday nights. That's where they turn on the blacklights and the music (not all techno thank god) and bowl until the wee hours.

They did have something like that in Portland going on. I imagine there's probably something like that in Seattle or Bellevue, Tacoma is just not big enough.....

Oh yeah--I think in Bellevue there's a gay rollerskating thing that happens once a month--it doesn't play techno there either--it actually plays most of the stuff that I remember when I was growing up going to rollerskating rinks... Smile

When in Dallas I frequent a glbt country/western bar.

We affectionally refer to it as the "Rope a Ho."

Yay for the RoundUp!

There used to be a place in Seattle called the Timberline that was country, and occasionally they'd have 70's disco night. Then they moved to a new location and became a typical dance club playing, you guessed it, that same type of dance music.

I'd love to find a place in general, not gay necessarily--just a place in general that plays Brazilian dance music, or a ska place, or reggae (there used to be one in Seattle, straight, but it turned into a gang-infested hip-hop place), or other types of music that people can dance to other that typical type. I think my favorite kind is the more laid-back kind of dancing, a little more carefree. I like to be able to relax when I'm dancing, if that makes any sense at all, but if I can't do that, I at least prefer something that doesn't sound like the same exact typical fast dance rhythm with a bass hit on every beat, with effects layers that loop at a completely different rate on top of it that change every 5 minutes or so. I like hearing SONGS that make me dance, not something that sounds like it's computer generated with a randomizer.

Wow, I'm rambling. Somewhere in the world it was 4:20 over the past hour. Laughing
