You know--the thing I don't like about Dave Matthews Band is how similar so many of his songs sound to each other. He has a lot of complex patterns that he uses, but he RE-uses those patterns over and over again.
Linkin Park DEFINITELY is overrated, but I probably feel that way because I really don't like that band. _________________ Meow.
I will concede that the other bands I named are far worse than Dave Matthews
As for Linkin Park, you aren't alone Kizz. I have never liked them, either. They sound, suspiciously good. But not ACTUALLY good. Let me give you an example.
They hold the record for number 1 singles on modern alternative radio.
Hardly ever does their old stuff get played.
Do you find that ironic? Their music always makes it to number one, yet, a year later it fades away and is never to be heard again. Compare that to the beattles.
The beattles hold mainstream records with their singles. Yet, decades after their songs reached number one, they are still getting played.
Okay, smaller group?
Nine Inch Nails. Head Like a Hole, which came out 19 years ago, still gets regular play on alternative radio. So does Hurt, Closer and Only.
You should be very suspicious. Very, very suspicious about the Linkin Park sound.
HEre is WHY they are very popular, but can't last on old material: THey are produced by the best of producers. Rick Rubin for example, produced their last album. The best of the best producers-- often MANY great producers-- produce their music.
Any music that is super produced has an initial appeal to mainstream ear. It is immediately accessible and pleasant to the ear, therefore you may be fooled and say, "this is good music." But a song that is produced well, that isn't written well, cannot stand against the test of time. Songwriting is and will always be a very important element of good music.
When it comes to songwriting, Linkin Park is crap. But the record labels decided long ago that they were the perfect product to push for alternative listeners, and therefore, have pumped much money into making their records highly sanitized.
If you don't believe me, go ahead and look them up on youtube. Look at their live footage. Especially one that is improvised-- as in, less scripted. Its terrible. Let me give you my favorite example of how much they suckr. Here they try to cover a Nine Inch Nails song. How cute.
Hear a difference? See one? One is a band comprised of actual musicians who know how to perform and one is a bunch of awkward computer-nerds failing miserably. Everything from the drums, to the guitar, to the vocals are shitty as hell when performed by Linkin Park. Same song performed by Nine Inch Nails is better in every possible facet.

Have you listened to very much of his music? He does have a unique way of playing the guitar, but I can not say that his music all sounds the same.

He uses the same techniques over and over again. The chords change, but the techniques he just keeps re-using, as if it's some sort of gimmick or something, like the way that Jeff Lynne produces music but he has a bigger pallette.
I like the music, but I can really only listen to about 4 songs in a row before I start getting bored.
I've only heard 3 of his albums, so my opinion is definitely biased by that. _________________ Meow.

Keep in mind though Kizzume, that as a musician and producer this is something you will notice that most fans won't. Not saying it isn't worth pointing out. Just that not everyone will be bothered by this, and I'm sure a lot of people don't even notice it. I do too, but I digress....

You are definitely correct about that. Musicians generally listen to music very differently than those who are not. The favorite artists of musicians often are the least favorite of non-musicians. _________________ Meow.
