My New Computer!

So far so the new computer is totally kicking ass. Runs very fast and smooth with no problems thus far. Now I just have to find a second monitor so I can have both computers hooked up at the same time!!!! Preparing to switch the other to linux once it has a screen.

The new computer is running super fast and smooth. So far it plays the games I wanted to play, too. FEAR, which by the way is FREE and we could all play it sometime), Halo, Civilization-- they all run super smooth despite the fact that it may be a crappy gaming engine.

I also have it supped up with lots of security programs. No more AVG this time around though. Its just too much of a resource hog. I am using AVG Anti-Spyware though (Love it,) along with The BEST one still, A-Squared, no pest patrol because I don't want to pay for a second copy. I also am using Ad-aware and as my anti-virus I am running AVAST and NORTON FREE (Scanner only.) For a firewall, Zonealarm.

I originally went with Comodo Firewall for the new computer based on good reviews. It gets the thumbs down from me for being the single most irritating, stupid firewall I have ever seen. Its one thing to ask permission on everthing.....its another to ask 10-30 times, OVER AND OVER AGAIN, FOR EACH ONE THING. I kept clicking 'remember this setting' to no avail. Very very stupid and annoying.

Love ZoneAlarm though. Does a way better job than my McAfee did at protecting the computer. It gets 5 stars from me.

Programs I ditched with the new computer-- 1, Spybot Search and Destroy. Just too crappy these days. Never finds anything, is extremely buggy now with the new software upgrade. I just don't have any reason to use it these days because A-Squared is soo much better, and the other ones are at least slightly better.

2. Ditched AVG-Free this time, too.. As I stated earlier, just way too much of a resource hog. And the scans take too long for my patience. Sure, I run a lot of my scans while I sleep, but there were a couple times when I would wake up and it would still be scanning. Ridiculous.

3. McAfee security. Slow ass scanner, never detects anything. Only a so-so firewall. Updates on its own at the most annoying and inconvenient times. To McAfee it was just time to say "No way!"

Stuff I can't figure out how to do-- transfering some programs. I don't know if its possible or not, but I am hoping someone can help me. I want to take my "Microsoft Picture it!" and put it on my new computer. I tried copying it from the 'program files,' to no avail. Since I see no installer with it I don't know how I can do this. PLEASE HELP. I hate my other picture programs that I have on disc. And I know that technically Adobe Photoshop is like 1,000,000,000,000,000 times better. But I like Microsoft Picture it more. Its the first I used and I am the most familiar with it

I could help you with Photoshop, but I know nothing about "Microsoft Picture It!", unfortunately....

Assuming you're using XP, on the computer that already has it installed, go to start, run, type "regedit" minus the quotation marks and hit enter

Now hit ctrl + f

and then ype "picture it" minus the quotation marks and hit enter

Every time it stops and finds a reference to the program, you can look at where it has a "file" opened on the left side--in the tree view--click on that "file" that's open, and then go to file, export, type in a name you want to give it, and hit enter--with ONE exception--when the entry has the word MRU in it. This is generally for when you use Windows search option, like when searching for files on the computer. It won't hurt to include them, but it's generally frivolous to do.

Continue doing this over and over and over again until it has finished finding all the references and saving them as a file.

Now copy the program files from one computer to the other, in EXACTLY the same directory, and copy all the .reg files you created to somewhere like the desktop or my documents, and run each one of them. This may not be a perfect method, and it could possibly cause issues--using something like Tune-Up utilities after running the program and after a restart might be recommended. Do this at your own risk--I recommend getting the files in a not-so-savory way more than this method, but if you're pulling out your hair over it, go ahead and try it. It's tedious, but I've only had 2 out of about 20 tries at this have undesirable results, but again, that's a 10% chance.

I almost forgot to say--when you want to search again after it finds something after a ctrl + f, you just hit F3 and it will continue the search.

Meanwhile, I just put REASON on the new computer and am about to load THE SIMS COMPLETE VERSION on. Been a while since I played that game. Love it, and have plenty of space, so I think I will be playing it soon.
