First off, let me say that I am disappointed Kizzume has not given this web site a try. I'd love it if he took the time to review albums as he listened to them. It really is a fun experience, building up friends on that site. One of the best parts of it is if I haven't heard an album yet and I don't know if it's worth my time, I get to see the average "Friend Rating," which helps me figure out if its worth it. Obviously, I value the opinions of my friends more than just your usual nose-picker.

Anyway, I love this site, and I happen to have an impressive profile. I've reviewed hundreds of albums, personally. Sure, some might disagree with my reviews. Some may even get angry with my opinion. Hard to say. But it also seems to have enriched a generally tight-nitted community of listeners.

I have found SOOO much of the music I listen to, through RYM. We're talking MOST of my favorite bands I would have never known about if it wasn't for the various resources available on RYM, including "best of" lists for every single year since the 50s. And the best part, is it isn't some college jerk writing reviews, like on Pitchfork Media. RYM is the ultimate DEMOCRACY of music. Things get rated as the best of the year ONLY if they have the most high votes.

Beautiful, beautiful web site. And it DOES NOT interfere with being a member on Kizzume's message board. I personally think it would enhance it, myself, if a few other members here had profiles there, too.

The "community" section is also really cool place for discussion on music.

When I rate music, I'm often VERY harsh. More harsh than I really should be. I was on GarageBand.com for a while, getting my music up there by reviewing hundreds of songs. When I started receiving massive hate mail from people because I wasn't nice enough, I couldn't emotionally handle it. I'm as harsh of a music critic as Simon Cowell, possibly even harsher. I probably should have reported the hate mail, but I just didn't want to go through the hassle. If I started doing that on rateyourmusic.com , I would be sure to start getting hate mail again.

I don't LIKE judging people's music. I like to encourage people to make music, not discourage them from making it.

I'll think about it. I'll consider trying it out. I went to the site to just have a look, and they have a decently set up site. If you keep bugging me, I'll probably cave in and try it out.

Okay, I have an account there. It looks like it's not just for independent artists--I'm seeing major artists on there. Good. That will make it a little easier for me.

Yeah, it is actually generally for major artists. I just happen to have loadedmyself on there. Which you can do IF you are a contributing member-- they stress that a lot. You have to be "approved" before just loading bands on there, which prevents it from becoming as spamalicious as myspace or something. Self-promotion creations generally don't go over well at RYM.

As far as getting hate mail-- I have not received any on there personally. I have a friend who has received a pm or two he wasn't happy with. But there is a "REPORT" button directly available and their PM goes straight to an admin who gives people ONE warning and then they get banned.

It is a great site for finding music because of all the statistics it pulls, too. If you rate enough albums you will end up with a "compatability list" which is people who rated the same albums the same way. Then you can look at the other stuff they have rated that you haven't heard, that they gave good ratings to, and generally it is pretty acurate of a method of finding music you like.

Also, you don't HAVe to review. You can also ONLY rate if you like.

I can't find anything on there even mentioning "friends". I'm having a hard time getting around the site. Where would I click to see that you wanted to add me as a friend?

Still hoping you'll rate some stuff soon. Not even asking for reviews. Just ratings. I'd love to see where you place albums. Your favs and least favs of king crimson, pink floyd, bjork, etc. It's lots of fun!

Well, I've started to rate some music. So far it has been just the ones I like. Unfortunately it's harder for me to be verbose about things I like than the things I don't like about something. Eventually I'll get to the ones I don't like.

Sweet. Believe me, the more you do it the more you'll see all the benefits. the stats available on that site are unreal. As I've already stated, most of the music I have discovered was because of and through that site. Everything besides NIN and David Bowie which I have been listening to basically forever. Tis a very useful and enjoyable place! Smile
