Usually when the protagonists are immersed in glitzy lifestyles and fashion, we can expect a movie like The Devil Wears Prada, where the protagonist is a shallow little nerd turned whore who loses herself in the enamoring effect of prestige, and then by the end of the movie, sees the error of her ways celebrates what she always had as she goes back to being herself. Hooray that Sex and the City is better than that.

All who are unfamiliar with the cast won't be at a disadvantage for getting to know the characters: The movie offers a generous introduction which puts the ordinary viewer up to speed fast. What separates the women in Sex and the City from shows of its kind isn't so much the cleverness of the scripts, but the realness of their characters and their life-like drama, which we feel like on some level we can identify with. Unlike in Prada, or other movies and television shows of its breed, the characters in Sex and the City are more than just caricatures. Sure, their sense of fashion is impeccable. And the visual array of outfits certainly adds to the fun element of the movie, but underneath the glamor the movie actually offers some depth.

Rarely do I find this sort of movie moving. Sex in the City succeeds. I actually felt myself getting sad, and nearing a tear-up when things went wrong at one point for Carrie. I felt for the male characters too. When Miranda's husband, Steve, cheats on her (He and Miranda haven't had sex in 6 months, and he apparently gives into temptation elsewhere and comes back confessing his mistake to Miranda) it isn't that I relate with his behavior, but the sadness that comes with Steve's loss of Miranda is well portrayed.

The biggest drawback to the movie, typical enough, is the length. Anyone who is not a hardcore Sex and the City fan will find the 148 minute film to be about 74minutes too long. That is to say, the first half is plenty to suffice for a clever, funny, and believable movie with a lovable cast of characters. But the movie is not just based on the series; the movie is really a continuation of the series. It is a tying up of all the loose ends. And to do so takes quite a lot of time. This particular vulnerability will downgrade the movie substantially for the casual viewer, but will give the long time fan everything they could have hoped for.

I was never able to get into the show, unfortunately. I may give this one a chance on DVD though...

Really? But man, you want to talk about fashion, MAN, these girls have fashion! I haven't watched the show too much because I don't have cable, but at least in the movie, wow. They had one hell of a lot of cool clothes. LOL.

And as far as the girl version of comradarie, it can't be beat, too. They really are a great group of friends.

I never watched the series.

I think I'll catch up on all the tv episodes - and by then, the movie will be out on DVD and then I'll watch it
